VCU Together Update for students - Sept. 18
Testing options, daily health surveys, student orgs and more
Our priorities are the health, safety and wellness — both physical and emotional — of every member of the VCU community. VCU continues to monitor, assess and address situations as they arise. This weekly update will be a resource to help keep you informed as details become available. All updates are available at together.vcu.edu. Receive notifications by downloading VCU Mobile from your iOS or Android app store.
Understand your testing options
In addition to promoting healthy behaviors, such as wearing a mask and physical distancing, VCU’s current health and safety protocols include testing VCU community members with symptoms (symptomatic testing) as well as a percentage of those without symptoms (asymptomatic prevalence testing). Please visit for details about all aspects of VCU’s testing strategy.
Symptomatic testing: VCU community members who report symptoms to either Student Health Services or Employee Health may be referred for COVID-19 testing at a testing location on-campus. This will be conducted at no cost to students or employees. Students and employees can only receive a COVID-19 test if they are referred by Student Health Services or Employee Health, therefore it is essential that students and employees report symptoms by calling 1-804-MYCOVID or 1-804-692-6843. Students and employees who do not present any symptoms of COVID-19 are not guaranteed a test.
Asymptomatic prevalence testing: VCU randomly samples asymptomatic VCU community members to participate in COVID-19 testing each week at on-campus locations. VCU community members who wish to participate in COVID-19 testing, but who are not presenting with symptoms of COVID-19, can volunteer to participate in asymptomatic testing. VCU will contact you if and when you are selected to participate. Residential students are automatically enrolled in the asymptomatic testing pool. Non-residential students and employees must volunteer by filling out this online form. It is important that you make every effort to complete your test during the week you are invited to participate.
Workshops on demand for student organizations
University Student Commons and Activities have compiled workshops for student organizations and leaders. Lead Your Way Workshops are customized workshops for student leaders to have more engaged and successful organizations. Volunteer VCU is a consultation service for student orgs to get connected with volunteer opportunities in the VCU and Richmond community. Rec Sports in Motion - Fitness on Demand provides the opportunity for student orgs to participate in group exercise and team-building programs.
CareShare VCU is a peer-to-peer collaboration that matches VCU family volunteers (students, faculty, staff, alumni) with VCU student- and employee-parents who need support. This initiative was created to address the dire need for VCU students and employees to have protected time to complete their own work (while caring for their own children and helping them complete their schoolwork). Volunteers will virtually hang out with the children of VCU employees or students who need support. Sessions last 30-60 minutes and could consist of homework help, reading a book or watching a short movie. Parents can sign up here; and volunteers can sign up here. For any questions, please contact CareShareVCU@gmail.com.
