Quarantine and isolation

Q: What is the process for quarantine and isolation?

A: Isolation processes are established for on-campus residential students who present symptoms or test positive for COVID-19. Quarantine procedures are established for those who have been in contact with a COVID-19 positive individual, but present no symptoms. Residents who are confirmed positive with COVID-19 or presenting symptoms associated with COVID-19 will be moved to isolation housing. Members of the VCU community who are identified through contact tracing related to this exposure will be asked to quarantine for 14 days. VCU will follow CDC guidance related to support of these students. Residential Life and Housing set aside rooms in a separate building for potential isolation and quarantine needs for on-campus students. Student Health Services will monitor the student’s health and will coordinate with Residential Life and Housing to support food delivery, communication, and other needs. Non-residential students, as well as faculty and staff, will be asked to quarantine or isolate in their personal residence or other appropriate location.

Q: I think I may have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 and I self-quarantined. When and how can I be cleared?

A: Contact Student Health Services or Employee Health Services about quarantine and/or isolation clearance. Those who may have been exposed are generally directed to quarantine for 14 days and are released from quarantine after 14 days from their last known contact, if symptom free. Those who test positive for COVID-19 are instructed to isolate. In general, those who test positive can be around others after:

  • At least 10 days since symptoms first appeared and
  • At least 24 hours with no fever without fever-reducing medication and
  • Symptoms have improved

Q: I live in a VCU residence hall and I have symptoms of COVID-19. What should I do?

A: Students experiencing symptoms must contact the VCU COVID-19 call center at 1-804-MYCOVID or 1-804-692-6843. Residential Life and Housing created a guide to help our residents reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our residential community. Infection and exposure to COVD-19 can happen at any time with little or no time to react and prepare for isolation or quarantine. We encourage our residents to use this guide as a tool to prepare for isolation or quarantine before moving to campus. Q: If I must quarantine, can I do so in my own room?

A: Individuals who came into contact with a positive or symptomatic individual are notified to begin a 14-day self-quarantine period. Self-quarantine can often be completed within the resident’s own room. On occasion, residents may be temporarily relocated to quarantine into another on-campus space when they are unable to fully quarantine within their own space. The most common reason for this to occur is if they have a roommate who does not need to quarantine.

Q: What happens when a student moves out of isolation space?

A: When a student moves out of an isolation space, VCU cleans the room removing linens and trash, removing and replacing the shower curtain and hooks, and utilizing both disinfecting spray and electrostatic spray to disinfect all surfaces in the room and bathroom. When a student is released from either isolation or quarantine, they are provided with instructions on trash/linen removal, CDC guidelines for completing laundry, and are reminded to utilize the provided Virex disinfectant spray to wipe down surfaces in their permanent space.
